چکیده

A new class of multivariate probability density functions is proposed called the Gauss von Mises (GVM) family of distributions. The distinguishing feature of the GVM distribution is its definition on a cylindrical manifold, the underlying state space in which systems of orbital element coordinates are more accurately defined, which can provide a statistically rigorous treatment of uncertainty needed for uncertainty propagation and nonlinear filtering, orbit determination, tracking, and data association. This paper provides the initial motivation, mathematical background, and definition of the new GVM distribution along with a brief example to illustrate proof-of-concept.

Violations of Bell Inequalities for Measurements with Macroscopic Uncertainties: What does it Mean to Violate Macroscopic Local Realism?

We suggest to test the premise of “macroscopic local realism” which is sufficient to derive Bell inequalities when measurements of photon number are only accurate to an uncertainty of order n photons, where n is macroscopic. Macroscopic local realism is only sufficient to imply, in the context of the original Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen argument, fuzzy “elements of reality” which have a macroscopic...

Implicit Runge-kutta Methods for Uncertainty Propagation

Accurate and efficient orbital propagators are critical for space situational awareness because they drive uncertainty propagation which is necessary for tracking, conjunction analysis, and maneuver detection. Existing sigma pointor particle-based methods for uncertainty propagation use explicit numerical integrators for propagating the closely spaced orbital states as part of the prediction st...

Macroscopic Local Realism: How Do We Define It and Is It Compatible with Quantum Mechanics?

We introduce the concept of different orders (microthrough to macro-) of local realism. ``Macroscopic local realism'' states that events occurring at a location B cannot induce (immediate) macroscopic changes to a system at a location A spatially separated from B. ``Local realism'' in its entirety excludes all sizes of change. ``Local realism'' in its entirety is used by Einstein, Podolsky, and...

Familiar faces rendered strange: Why inconsistent realism drives characters into the uncanny valley

Computer-modeled characters resembling real people sometimes elicit cold, eerie feelings. This effect, called the uncanny valley, has been attributed to uncertainty about whether the character is human or living or real. Uncertainty, however, neither explains why anthropomorphic characters lie in the uncanny valley nor their characteristic eeriness. We propose that realism inconsistency causes ...

Cognitive components of naming in children: effects of referential uncertainty and stimulus realism.

The ease of picture naming in children was assessed as a function of two stimulus characteristics: (a) the number of available correct names for a picture (referential uncertainty) and (b) the degree to which a picture realistically represents the depicted object (stimulus realism). Two experiments employing different methods demonstrated that: (a) children named low uncertainty objects (those ...
